Visas for GPs is an initiative of the Australian Government administered by the Consortium of Rural Workforce Agencies

All nominations for an employer-sponsored visa must be accompanied by a Health Workforce Certificate. To apply for a Health Workforce Certificate, you will need to download the Standard Application Form (link below) and submit to HR+ Tasmania using

HR+ Tasmania will work with the Rural Workforce Agency (RWA) in the relevant jurisdiction to assess the application. Applications will be assessed according to the Program Guidelines (link below) as developed by the Department of Health and will use the Department of Health’s Assessment Tool to ensure the process is effective, transparent, and consistent with relevant legalisation and regulatory frameworks.

A Health Workforce Certificate will only be provided where the position responds to genuine workforce need as determined by the Assessment Tool. Processing service standard times apply with the majority of assessment applications being processed within 5-10 business days. Where a practitioner has not yet been identified an application for position assessment can be completed, and, if recommended an email advising ‘certified pending practitioner details’ will be provided (practitioner details need to be provided prior to the Employer Sponsored Nomination application).

Health Workforce Certificates are valid for a period of 3 months from the date of issue. Some positions are eligible for automatic or expedited certification. To find out more, please contact the Visas for GPs team.

For more information on obtaining a Visa, working and skilled visas visit the Department of Home Affairs website.

Employment Contracts Signed Prior to 11 March 2019

Practices and candidates who have signed employment contracts or letters of offer prior to 11 March 2019 will be issued with a Health Workforce Certificate to recognise the agreement reached before the commencement of the Visas for GPs program. Applications from practices in this category will be accepted up until 30 June 2019. Applications received after this date will require position assessment.

A number of applications have been received where the employer/candidate has attempted to back date the employment contract. This is not acceptable, applications need to be able to demonstrate (with corroborating evidence) that the agreement was reached prior to the commencement of the Program. This evidence must include a letter of offer or employment contract signed by both parties, supported by the original email that accompanied the signed letter of offer or employment contract. Alternative evidence may be considered as long as it clearly demonstrates that both parties committed to the employment arrangement prior to the commencement of the program and could not be altered by the applicant in any way.
